Wake measurements for flow around a sphere in a viscoelastic fluid

چکیده
The flow field around a sphere falling at its terminal velocity in a column of viscoelastic non-shear-thinning fluid is experimentally measured with digital particle image velocimetry. The working fluid is an extensively characterized, monodisperse, polystyrene based Boger fluid. The sphere radius relative to the radius of the column of fluid is small (a/rc50.083). The Weissenberg number (lUt /a) ranges from 0.5 to 14 over which the sphere experiences a drag increase up to 8 times that of the Newtonian flow. The flow field is investigated in detail for We 0.5 to 2.5. A length and width scale is defined for the wake. Over this range of We the wake is found to grow linearly with We and become self-similar in a transverse cross-section of the axial component of the velocity. Streamlines along with extension and rotation rates along those streamlines are also determined. © 1999 American Institute of Physics. @S1070-6631~99!01212-X#

Numerical Simulation of the Wake Flow Behind an Ellipse using Random Vortex Method (RESEARCH NOTE)
Direct numerical simulation of the wake flow around and behind a planar ellipse using a random vortex method is presented. Fluid is considered incompressible and the aspect ratios of ellipse and the angles of attacks are varied. This geometry can be a logical prelude to the more complex geometries, but less time dependent experimental measurements are available to validate the numerical results...
متن کاملFlow induced by a sphere settling in an aging yield-stress fluid
We have studied the flow induced by a macroscopic spherical particle settling in a Laponite suspension that exhibits a yield-stress, thixotropy and shear-thinning. We show that the fluid thixotropy (or aging) induces an increase with time of both the apparent yield stress and shear-thinning properties but also a breaking of the flow fore-aft symmetry predicted in Hershel-Bulkley fluids (yield-s...
متن کاملImpact dynamics of a solid sphere falling into a viscoelastic micellar fluid
We present an experimental study of the impact of a solid sphere on the free surface of a viscoelastic wormlike micellar fluid. Spheres of various densities and diameters are dropped from different heights above the fluid surface, reaching it with a nonzero velocity which determines the subsequent dynamics. Measurements of the initial sphere penetration are found to scale with the ratio of the ...
متن کاملFlow of a wormlike micelle solution past a falling sphere
With the increasing use of wormlike micelle solutions as rheological modifiers in many consumer products, the prediction of the behavior of these fluids has grown increasingly important in recent years. In this paper, the flow past a sphere falling at its terminal velocity through a column of a wormlike micelle solution is experimentally studied. The working fluid is an entangled wormlike micel...

A review is presented covering the latest contributions to the slow viscoelastic flow past solid spheres and bubbles. The existing theoretical approaches are reviewed together with the available numerical methods. The proximity of container walls and its effect upon the motion of a sphere is also considered. Emphasis has been made on presenting recent experimental and numerical work intended to...
